|In 2009 Lithuania will preside at the Baltic Assembly
On 5 – 6 December Deividas Matulionis, the State Secretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the 27th Session of the Baltic Assembly and the 14th Baltic Council – the joint meeting of the Baltic Council of Ministers and the Baltic Assembly in the Estonian city of Viljandi, informed press service of the Lithuanian MFA.
Representatives of the MFA of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia spoke at the conference, organised on the initiative of Estonia presiding at the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2008. Presentations were also delivered by Parliament Members of the Baltic States and representatives from other authorities, and experts in social, economic, ecological, educational and other spheres.
D. Matulionis introduced at the Baltic Council the priorities of Lithuania for the period of the Lithuanian presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers and the Baltic Assembly. The principal attention in his speech was given to the issues of safety, energy and connecting infrastructure, as well as to the relations with the Eastern neighbours of the EU, and the significance of cooperation between the Baltic States in the face of the economic crisis.
Lithuania will take the relay of presidency at the Baltic Council of Ministers and the Baltic Assembly from Estonia as from 1 January 2009.
