Baltic States will be allowed access to the “nuclear information” of the NATO

2009 01 19

The US President George Bush gave instructions to allow access of some new members to the NATO, including the Baltic States, to certain secret “nuclear information”.

In the officiary note referred to the US Minister of Defence and circulated within the White House he stated that he has decided to satisfy the request of Pentagon delivered in August with regards to this issue. The decision covers Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Estonia.

According to the document the above states might be attached to the agreement between the members of the NATO in the sphere of cooperation related to nuclear information, including “technical supplements and annexes in the sphere of security”. In general, the agreement of 1965 is referred to as ATOMAL in the press release of ITAR-TASS.

“The agreement allows the delivery of only nuclear information, and not on armament, nuclear materials or ammunition” stressed Bush. Earlier, according to his words, Hungary, Poland, Check Republik and Spain have joined ATOMAL.

In accordance with the statement to the US Congress, from the moment of its receipt, the reading of the sixty day term shall start, following which in absence of objections the supplemented agreement shall come into effect.
