Estonia is willing to become an interim member of the Security Council to the UN

2009 01 18

It is of utmost importance for Estonia to become a more significant player in the UN. This was stated by the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet, who is currently on a visit in New York and had a meeting with the Secretary General of the UN.

Estonia has become a member of the UN economic and social Councils, i.e. for the first time Estonia was elected to such positions. It is our aim to continue expanding our participation within the structure of the UN. Our intention is to delegate our candidate to the Council on Human Rights and for the interim membership in the Security Council of the UN” – said Paet in the interview with the radio news ERR, as reported by the portal ERR Uudised.

During the meeting with the Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-moon most of the key issues of the global politics were addressed, starting with the crisis and ending with piracy.
