Ukraine and Belarus are looking towards the West: they have agreed „associate“ against Russia

2009 01 24

On 20 January negotiations between the Presidents of the Ukraine and Belarus concluded in signing a package of economic documents. Lukashenka admitted that all the time Ukraine had helped Belarus to conciliate with Europe and the USA. In spring already Kiev and Minsk may be admitted to the EU programme "Eastern Partnership", aimed at implementing Western values in the post-soviet countries.

“Vremia Novostej” reported that Lukashenka noted at the meeting the relevance of the possibility to implement the project Odessa-Brody, which could “supply oil to the Baltic States and Poland through our system of transportation” from the Southern direction. Inter-Governmental memorandum on cooperation in the sphere of energy was signed accordingly.

The president of the Ukraine Jushchenko stated that the two countries must become “significant actors in the sphere of transit”.

Talking about the routes of transportation from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea, Aleksandr Lukashenka noted that Minsk is ready to address the issue jointly with the Baltic States. And all this against the context of recent arguments between Moscow and Kiev, where the Russian side was talking about the exigency of constructing the pipelines the "Nord Stream” and the “South Stream”, which should supply gas to the consumers bypassing the Ukraine and Belarus, noted the publication "Transitnij Sojuz".

The political outcome of the negotiations was no less impressive, noted “Komersant”. “I would like to thank you for this colossal support you have extended at various levels in the meetings with Europeans and Americans. We admit your merits for the concerted dialogue today between Belarus and the West”, said Lukashenka addressing Jushchenko.
