Latvia accused Russia and Belarus in the try-out attack on the Baltics

2009 10 16

The Latvian Minister of Defence Imants Liegis stated that the Russian-Belarus scenario of military training “West-2009” includes the attack on the Baltic States in the framework of liberating the “enclosed Kaliningrad”. The words of Liegis pronounced in the discussion “Russian defence policy - will there be any changes?” on 14 September were reported by DELFI.

Military training “West-2009” lasted for three weeks – from 8 to 29 September. Participants of the training noted that the training was exceptionally of defensive character. According to the scenario Belarus is attacked by assumed enemy, and the Russian military forces enter to provide support in restoring the state border.

By the end of September Aleksandr Alesin, the Belarusian military analyst, stated to the "Белорусские новости" (Belarusian News), that during exercises a situation was developed, where Russian military forces liberate Kaliningrad and “capture the Baltic bridgehead" afterwards.

As reported earlier by “РИА Новости“, the NATO experts were observing the course of trainings. The General Secretary of NATO Anders Fog Rasmussen stated that the training has not endangered any of the states of the alliance. Moreover, the President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves suggested organising the NATO military trainings on the territory of the Baltic States in response.
