2010 07 12

On 7 June Andrus Ansip, the Prime Minister of Estonia, had a meeting with the US Delegation from the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (the Helsinki Commission). This information was reported to IA REGNUM News by the Estonian Government Office, noting that the Delegation includes the US Senate members – senators Ben Cardin, Dick Durbin, Tom Adell, Christopher Smith, Luisa McIntosh-Slotter and LLoyd Doggett. This is the largest US Senate delegation visiting Estonia during the period of its existence.
Ansip introduced the guests to the economic situation of Estonia and the conservative budgetary policy of the Government, “the outcome of which is the introduction of Euro in Estonia as from 2011”.
According to the assessment of Ansip, the USA policy on non-recognition of the “occupation of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union was of great importance”. The Prime Minister expressed his acknowledgment for such support. According to his words, the USA has played a significant role in restoring independence of Estonia, restructuring the national system and joining the NATO.
The Helsinki Commission of the US Senate (another title – the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe - CSCE) was established in 1976 in the USA following the signing in 1975 of the Helsinki (Finland) Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Commission includes as the US Senate members, as the representatives from the US President Chamber. Senator Ben Cardin is the Head of the Commission since 2006.
