Janukovich has finally revoked joining of the Ukraine into the NATO

2010 07 20

The President Viktor Janukovich signed the earlier approved by the Parliament Law on “The Principles of Foreign and Internal Policy”, which enforces the status of the Ukraine outside the block and revokes the joining of the country into the NATO, reported on 15 July NEWSru.ua referring to the press office of the Government.

The Law stipulates that the key principle in the foreign policy of the country is “observance of the policy of the country outside blocks, meaning non-participation of the Ukraine in any military-political unions, giving priority to participation in improving and developing European systems of collective security, proceeding the constructive cooperation with the NATO and other military-political blocks on any issues of mutual concern”.

The Law also provides for including certain amendments in the law of the Ukraine on “The Principles of National Security”. In particular, the provision on integration of the Ukraine into the Euro-Atlantic Area of Security is deleted from the Article defining priorities of the national interest.

Moreover, provision on seeking for membership in the “Organisation of North-Atlantic Treaty” is eliminated from the Article on Key directions of the national policy concerning the issues of national security. However, the goal of membership in the European Union remains, through “retaining good neighbourhood relations and strategic partnership with the Russian Federation and other CIS states, also with other countries of the world”.

The Law formulates the approach towards the “language issues”. According to the Law, the Russian language and other languages of national minorities of the Ukraine shall be protected, providing for free development and use, noted the publication.

Draft Law on “The Principles of Foreign and Internal Policy” was introduced to the parliament by Viktor Janukovich, and the Supreme Rada adopted it on the 2nd of July. Subsequently, the opposition – the block of Julia Timoshenko and the block “Nasha Ukraina – national self-defence” – have sharply criticized the draft law for the refusal from the membership in the NATO. It has also requested to enforce the status of the Ukrainian language as the “only official national language” and invited to refuse from voting for the document.
