At the beginning of May the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite will visit the South Caucasus: the Republics of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbajdzjan.
The visit is planned within the framework of Lithuania's presidency of the OSCE and the related attempts of influencing resolution of territorial conflicts in the South Caucasus (clash around the self-proclaimed Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno Karabach).
Earlier, as reported by Armenia Today, the President of Lithuania has stated at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, that “efforts for the regulation of the persistent conflicts are of utmost importance” for this organization. She noted that she will try to make use of the coming visit to the Caucasus for “strengthening the atmosphere of trust”.
Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagornyj Karabach have announced their independence at the beginning of 1990-ies. The states, which de jure cover these regions (correspondingly Georgia and Armenia) have tried to restore the control over them in the military way, however, without success. Moreover, they are still making attempts to get the said territories back.
