Visa regime abolished on the Latvian border with Belarus

2011 12 06

On the 1st of December Ambassadors of Latvia and Belarus exchanged notes in Vitebsk enforcing the agreement on free-visa regime for the cross-border citizens of both states, which was discussed and described in the media a lot.

On this occasion the General Consulate of Belarusheld a press conference on 2 December in Daugavpilsfor local media, according to the portalgrani.lv.

The General Consul of Belarus in Daugavpils Viktor Geysik said that the signing of such agreement is the outcome of intense mutual work and a significant event for both countries.

Local authorities may from the 1st of December start compiling lists, which will be delivered to the Consulate General by 20 December for further approval, and from the 1st of February permits are planned to be issued.

The Consulate General of Belarus is planning to introduce a preliminary registration by phone and attend more than 100 persons per day.

Attention was given at the press conference to certain nuances, as for example, such: if you entered the territory of Belarus on the basis of the permit for stay on the cross-border area, you shall register with the authorities no later than within 5 working days of stay. In the case of your arrival in Belarus under the visa regime you have 30 working days for similar registration. And this is not the only issue.

Permits for free-visa entrance into the cross-border area are currently issued for the period of one year, but according to V. Geysik, it is planned to issue such permits for a period of 5 years.
