|Abdullah Gül: Latvia and Lithuania support our entry into the EU
On 2 April the Turkish President Abdullah Gül set off on an official visit to Riga and Vilnius. On the eve of departure, he met with reporters and told them that the authorities of Latvia and Lithuania pledged to support the request of Turkey on joining the European Union.
The head of the state reminded about the Lithuanian EU Council presidency in the summer of 2013, and the Latvian - in 2015. He also noted that Turkey has established friendly relations with these countries already in the twenties of the last century. Gül did not forget that the Baltic countries are allies of Turkey in the NATO.
"The main purpose of my visit - the development of economic relations and trade partnership," - he said, adding that since 2009, the volume of trade with Latvia has doubled, and with Lithuania increased by two and a half time.
An example of such a partnership was the activities of the national airline of Turkey - TurkishAirlines. Every week it makes 10 flights to Riga. In summer of 2013 flights will connect Turkey and Vilnius, informed TheTurkishWeekly.
