Belarus speaks about the expansion of relations with Latvia

2013 04 18

Belarus and Latvia are going to bring the bilateral cooperation to a new, higher level. This was announced after the talks in Vitebsk between the foreign ministers of the two countries.

According to the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Makey, the sides discussed a wide range of issues on cooperation, including the spheres of trade, economy, political and humanitarian areas, and the results of the practical implementation of the intergovernmental agreement on cross-border movement of people. "On all these issues, we found mutually acceptable solutions and agreed on further actions," - he said.

"Our talks were constructive and fruitful, and we believe that in the near future appropriate instructions will be given to other departments for developing specific projects, on which we have already agreed and which will facilitate leading our partnership to a new level", - quotes BELTA the Belarusian Foreign Minister.

Head of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkevichs confirmed that, especially in the field of commercial-economic cooperation Belarus and Latvia have significant prospects. In addition, he said, they talked about the need to address some of the issues for enhancing mutual trust, particularly in the defence sector. "Everything that can build trust between the two countries needs to be done", - said the Latvian minister.

During the talks issues on the relations between Belarus and the EU were also examined as well as a number of other issues of mutual interest.

In particular, the governments of Belarus and Latvia have signed the agreement on the regime of the Belarusian-Latvian border.

For solving the issues related to the implementation of the state border regime, and the settlement of border incidents, the institute of cross-border commissioners was established.

A joint Belarusian-Latvian commission will be formed on state border issues entrusted with the task of supervising its content, organization of checks of passing the state border, and coordination of the competent state bodies on relevant issues.
