Viktor Stepanovich. The Kremlin bomb for Latvia

2007 05 15

From the 1st of June Russia is raising export duty tariffs on oil and oil products. It is an internal measure for Russia, but it will inevitably blow on its Western neighbours as well.

The forum on “Pipeline transportation in 2007” was held in Moscow in April. The key topics on the agenda of the forum were related to the following issues: oil export is no longer the mission of Russia, which is standing rather strongly on its feet for supplying the product and not the raw material; moreover, if to export the raw oil, then with a good reason.

The direct and rather operative outcome of the statements was the decision of the Russian Government to raise export duty tariffs on raw oil since the 1st of June - from 156 USD up to 200 USD per ton, for light oil products – from 118 to 148 USD, and for the dark oil products – from 63 to 79 USD.

The increase of duty tariffs will first of all aggravate the crisis of oil processing industry in Belarus. And Latvia is buying the Lion's share of its diesel fuel in Belarus. The increased tariffs will have impact on Lithuania as well, where Latvia is buying petrol.

There is no use talking about Estonia and its development projects of terminals in Tallinn and Mugu for cargo transit, including oil products, after the famous recent events…
