Conflict covered by historical emotions

Mass riots in Tallinn streets: broken windows, robbed shops, many policemen and lots of drunken Russian speaking youth, shouting pro-Russian slogans and provoking aggression. Such a picture in the broadcasts from Estonia has become ordinary last week. Of course, except the Russian TV channels, which disseminated quite an opposite propaganda highlighting disrespect of the Baltic States to the heroes of the 2nd World War and fully justifying feelings of the Russian to the monument which used to stand in the centre of the Estonian capital.
Certainly, even after certain Russian politicians extended their requirements on application of diplomatic sanctions to Estonia appeared, one could hardly expect that situation in Tallinn will become as we are all aware today. It is even harder to believe that riots have been organized by exceptionally local people, i.e. the Russian speaking Estonian citizens without any influence and support of Moscow.
However, street riots is one thing. Another thing is when radical young people endanger security of the diplomatic representations and attack heads of diplomatic missions, as was the case in Moscow this week.
It is also a different situation also when warnings of Russia are directed not only to Estonia, but also to the entire EU. By these warnings Moscow indirectly demonstrates that removal of a monument has only been one more convenient pretext for starting a conflict between the value system of the West and the authoritarian Russia. Therefore the statement of the company Russian Railways on termination of oil transportation to Estonia is quite a logical consequence of the above. In fact they announced that supply of oil has been terminated due to the repairs but not because of possible sanctions against Estonia.
This reminds of the story with pipeline Druzhba, which some time ago went out of order and this breakdown coincided with the political disputes between Vilnius and Moscow and between Brussels and Moscow. Therefore, it was not LUKoil, but Mažeikiai Nafta (purchased by the Polish) which was deprived of supply of the raw material by pipelines. We can only remind that the Russian company Transneft cannot make a decision to fix it or not. It could be understandable if this would take a week or a month, but when the company cannot make up its mind for nearly a year, it is not clear on whether its actions are predetermined by an economic logic or by the political insinuations from the top.
Russian Railways had no complains (before the story with the monument) on traffic disorders towards Estonia. Similarly as the operating pipeline - after having learned that Mažeikiai Nafta (Mažeikiai Oil) would be sold to the PKN Orlen, it has suddenly broken.
Therefore, both the riots in Tallinn, the attack of the Estonian ambassador in Moscow and requirements of the Russian politicians to terminate diplomatic relations with Tallinn, are only additional tactical measures demonstrating that strategic interests of the Kremlin are the same in terms of the Baltic States, and with respect to the EU. Simply in Estonia the situation was anticipated for a more emotional action, which is currently getting the shape of economic sanctions Lithuania is familiar with.
The response of foreign countries and the EU itself to the events in Tallinn was quite vague, therefore it is natural why the pro-Russian actions have acquired such a huge speed. In fact, Washington and Berlin have expressed their support recently, whereas the Lithuanian Prime Minister started to worry that Lithuania might be facing something similar. However, once and again there was no determination under the diplomatic wordings to identify the impertinence of Moscow, which is being expressed towards the Baltic States at the first opportunity.
One more interesting aspect: in terms of the above fuss, no one even tried to clarify the actual historic truth, and actions of the Estonian Russian speaking population, who were brought to Tallinn from Narva, were based only on the emotions suggested by history. According to the historic facts, the Red Army entered Tallinn which has already been left by the Germans, therefore it is not clear who killed the soldiers buried under the removed monument. However, the patriots who have been breaking windows and attacked the embassy, as well as their manipulators - the speakers of the Kremlin - did not care about that. |
