The NATO General is going to address Russia on the issue of militarizing the Kaliningrad oblastj (Lithuania)

2012 06 26

Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Knud Bartels, at the meeting with the Russian military command is going to raise the question concerning the increase of arms in the west, especially in the Kaliningrad region. This was told to the reporters on 22 June by the Lithuanian Minister of Defence Rasa Jukneviciene, who together with other members of the Lithuanian government had discussions with the NATO General visiting Lithuania, stated the correspondent of IA REGNUM.

"What he said about his future meetings with one of the representatives of the top Russian military command, General Nikolai Makarov- this is exactly what we wanted- that we spoke together as NATO, and on behalf of NATO with Russia, that it is not understood as only our trouble and concern" – stated in his turn the Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius at the briefing.

The intention to raise the issue on the militarization of Kaliningrad region was confirmed by the General himself. He noted that he has been invited to Moscow to meet with the Chief of Staff of the Russian Army.

As reported earlier by IA REGNUM, in response to the deployment of the U.S. missile defence system, Russia has noted the possibility of dislocating the newest types of weapons in the Kaliningrad region. However, Lithuania has repeatedly stated that, for example, complex "Iskander" and C-300 have been located in the region already.
