Lithuania and Russia open a new border crossing to the Kaliningrad oblast

2012 07 26

The border crossing point will be placed on the bridge, which will be built across the River Neman.

Representatives of Russian and Lithuanian Foreign Ministries discussed the development of border crossing points and the prospects of opening a new crossing point.

As reported on the official site of the ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, the border crossing point will be named Rambynas - Dubki. The opening of the crossing point will become possible after the construction of the new bridge across the river Nemunas.

It should be reminded that the entire flow of traffic is currently moving across the Queen Louise bridge, built in 1907 in honour of the hundredth anniversary of the Tilzit Peace, signed by Napoleon with Russia and Prussia.

The bridge and the approaches to it are part of the E77 motorway, Pskov - Riga – Joniðkis - Siauliai – Taurage – Talpaki - Kaliningrad - Gdansk – Elbing - Warsaw – Rabom – Krakow - Testena – Ruzomberok – Zvolen - Budapest. By the end of 2011 Russia and Lithuania have agreed on the joint construction of a new bridge across the Nemunas. Authorities estimate the cost of 1.5 billion roubles. It is planned to complete the construction in 2 -2.5 years.
